Texas Rangers Roster Report 2009-05-06

Texas Rangers Roster Report 2009-05-06
The Rangers continue to tweak their struggling bullpen, partly because of ineffectiveness and partly because of health. In one five-day span over the last 10 days, the Rangers added three pitchers to the bullpen: LHP Derek Holland (called up to make major league debut), RHP Darren O'Day (claimed on waivers from the New York Mets) and RHP Luis Mendoza (called up from Class AAA ). O'Day quickly appeared for the Rangers, getting into an extra-inning game just 20 minutes after arriving at the Rogers Centre in Toronto. He allowed a game-winning hit to Kevin Millar.

PLAYER NEWS:

--3B Michael Young is getting hot again. Young was 3-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to nine games. The first two hits came off LHP Erik Bedard, against whom Young entered the game 3-for-23 (.130). It was his lowest batting average against any pitcher he's faced at least 20 times. Young is hitting .425 (17-for-40) during the streak.

--RHP Darren O'Day picked up his first major league win Tuesday by pitching a scoreless ninth and benefiting from the Rangers' six-run 10th. O'Day was charged with a run in the 10th before leaving for RHP Frank Francisco. It's the first earned run he's been charged with in 8 2/3 innings this season split between the Mets and the Rangers. He was claimed off waivers April 22.

--CF Josh Hamilton, who has played catch the last two days, is expected to take some swings to further test his sore intercostal muscle. Hamilton is expected to go on a two-day rehab assignment this weekend in preparation for being activated Tuesday.

MEDICAL WATCH:

RHP Kris Benson (right elbow tendinitis) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 16. He will be activated May 6.
