Texas Rangers Roster Report 2009-05-05

Texas Rangers Roster Report 2009-05-05
The Rangers continue to tweak their struggling bullpen, partly because of ineffectiveness and partly because of health. In one five-day span over the last 10 days, the Rangers added three pitchers to the bullpen: LHP Derek Holland (called up to make major league debut), RHP Darren O'Day (claimed on waivers from the New York Mets) and RHP Luis Mendoza (called up from Class AAA ). O'Day quickly appeared for the Rangers, getting into an extra-inning game just 20 minutes after arriving at the Rogers Centre in Toronto. He allowed a game-winning hit to Kevin Millar.

PLAYER NEWS:

--The beat goes on for RHP Frank Francisco, who got the last four outs of the game for his eighth save of the season. Francisco has converted all 13 save chances presented him since he took over as closer last August. As closer, he has pitched in 20 games and has not allowed an earned run (he has allowed one unearned run) in 24 innings. He has allowed just 17 baserunners to reach base (10 hits, six walks and one hit batter) while striking out 28.

--The Rangers officially optioned C Max Ramirez to Class AAA Oklahoma City and recalled OF Greg Golson. Golson will be used sparingly, if at all, while OF Josh Hamilton is on the disabled list for at least another week. Golson could be used as a pinch runner for a catcher and could then play the outfield in kind of a double switch.

--LHP A.J. Murray, who had a 0.87 ERA at Class AA Frisco, was promoted to Class AAA Oklahoma City on Monday. He could soon become an option for the Rangers' bullpen, but Murray, coming back from arm surgery, will have to show he can pitch on back-to-back nights. He has not pitched on consecutive days this season.

--CF Josh Hamilton tested his strained left rib cage muscle by playing some catch on Monday. It was his first baseball activity since going on the disabled list last week. Hamilton may try to swing a bat on Wednesday or Thursday of this week.

MEDICAL WATCH:

OF Josh Hamilton (strained left ribcage muscle) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 27.

RHP Kris Benson (right elbow tendinitis) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 16.

RHP Willie Eyre (right groin strain) went on the 15-day disabled list April 23. He had begun the season on the DL with the same injury.

RHP Dustin Nippert (upper back soreness) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 22. He began a rehab assignment with Class AA Frisco on April 11, but he strained a muscle in his side.

RHP Joaquin Benoit (rotator cuff surgery in January 2009) went on the 60-day disabled list April 5. He is out for at least the first half of the season but could miss the entire year.
