Texas Rangers Notes, Quotes 2009-02-24
--RHP Kris Benson, attempting to return to the majors after March 2007 shoulder surgery, signed a minor league deal with the Rangers and was invited to the team's spring camp. He pitched briefly and ineffectively last summer for the Phillies' Class AAA affiliate.

--OF Marlon Byrd underwent microfracture surgery on his left knee and is still not completely pain free. He has been running at about "75 percent" during the club's first couple of workouts. Byrd dealt with the knee soreness throughout last season. He went on the DL early in the season after a terrible start but hit .328 after returning in early May.

--Manager Ron Washington told reporters he is considering four options to replace DH Milton Bradley in the cleanup spot: RF Nelson Cruz, OF Andruw Jones, OF Josh Hamilton and DH Hank Blalock. Jones, who is in camp on a minor league contract, is the only one with significant experience in the fourth spot. He has 117 homers in 1,538 at-bats there.

--OF Nelson Cruz has been added to the Dominican Republic's entry in the World Baseball Classic. He is expected to play right field for the Dominican. The only other Ranger in the WBC is OF-DH Frank Catalanotto, who is playing for Italy. LHP Eddie Guardado and RHP Luis Mendoza each turned down chances to play for Mexico to concentrate on winning jobs with the Rangers.

--The Rangers have already signed major league veterans LHP Eddie Guardado and RHP Derrick Turnbow as potential bullpen pieces and may not be done shopping on that front. The club is expected to send a representative to watch free agent RHP Chad Cordero throw next week. Cordero appeared in only six games for Washington last season because of a torn labrum.

--OF Brandon Boggs, who is a longshot to make the team, has been limited by shoulder soreness early in camp. Boggs jammed his shoulder last August making a play in Arlington.

BY THE NUMBERS: .833 -- 2B Ian Kinsler's OPS over the last two seasons. It is the highest OPS for an AL second baseman in that time period.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I've got to go out there and play the game I've always been playing and have fun with it. I think the main thing that happened last year was that it wasn't fun." -- OF Andruw Jones in the Dallas Morning News explaining his awful 2008 season with Los Angeles. Jones hit just .158 for the Dodgers.
