Texas Rangers Notes, Quotes 2008-05-31
--LHP Kason Gabbard, who had walked 20 batters in his last 21 innings of work, was optioned to Class AAA Oklahoma on Friday. The Rangers will move RHP Doug Mathis into the rotation to replace Gabbard. Mathis is expected to start Tuesday versus Cleveland. The Rangers purchased the contract of RHP Robinson Tejeda to give them a long man in the bullpen. Tejeda had a 2.18 ERA at Class AAA Oklahoma.

--RHP Dustin Nippert had a busy day despite not doing anything. He was first activated from the disabled list where he had spent a month with "foot discomfort," then cleared waivers and was outrighted to Oklahoma. Nippert has been pitching as a starter on rehab with Oklahoma. He is 3-1 with a 4.59 ERA there. He will continue to work as a starter.

--RHP Franklyn German cleared outright waivers, but declined to accept an assignment to Class AAA Oklahoma, as was his right since he'd previously been outrighted. He will become a free agent.

--DH Milton Bradley was scratched shortly before Friday's game with an inner ear infection. The Rangers moved 1B Frank Catalanotto to DH and inserted 1B Chris Shelton into the lineup.

--SS Michael Young extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a first-inning single.

BY THE NUMBERS: 14 -- Times DH/OF Milton Bradley has been ejected in his career, through May 25. Bradley picked up two ejections in a three-day span on the road trip by arguing balls and strikes with home plate umpires Jeff Nelson and Dale Scott. Manager Ron Washington was also ejected after one of Bradley's arguments for defending his outfielder.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "When you draft a player, especially a high school player, you take a chance. They are so young and you don't know what choices they are going to make. I didn't see what happened to me happening and I know they didn't. But with kids, it's hard to predict what choices they will make. I'm grateful they drafted me and grateful they gave me the opportunity. There was a while where I felt like they gave up on me, but when personnel changed, they gave me a second chance. But it wasn't meant to be for me to be there. If it was, I'd be there now." -- Rangers CF Josh Hamilton, discussing his star-crossed career with Tampa Bay, which made him the No. 1 pick in the 1999 draft only to watch him struggle with substance abuse and ultimately be suspended from baseball for three years.
