--LHP C.J. Wilson, who had elbow surgery in early August, volunteered to go to winter ball to pitch, but the Rangers elected to have him rest through the winter.

--RHP Pedro Strop signed a minor league deal. Strop, 23, was considered Colorado's No. 9 prospect by Baseball America entering the season, but a fracture at the tip of his right elbow short-circuited his season after just seven appearances. Strop underwent surgery in June and isn't likely to be ready for the start of spring training. But like RHP Warner Madrigal a year ago, he is a converted position player who could be intriguing as a reliever.

--The Rangers must set their 40-man roster by Nov. 19. They currently have 37 players on the roster and are likely to add 1B/OF John Mayberry Jr. and INF Jose Vallejo. Other possibilities include RHPs Omar Poveda, Pedro Strop and Michael Schlact.

BY THE NUMBERS: .372 -- Josh Hamilton's batting average in 137 at-bats as a right fielder in 2008. He hit .282 as a center fielder.
