Rangerszone.com | Texas Rangers News, rangers Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - --OF Josh Hamilton was named to the AL's Silver Slugger team for his outstanding offensive season. Hamilton batted .304 with 32 home runs, 130 RBIs, and 35 doubles in his first campaign with the Rangers. He led the American League in both RBIs and total bases (tied, 331), joining Alex Rodriguez (2002) and Ruben Sierra (1989) as the only Texas batters ever to lead the league in those two categories in a season. Hamilton ranked among the league's top 10 in hits, home runs, extra-base hits and slugging, as his .901 on-base-plus-slugging percentage figure was the sixth highest in the AL.
--C Jarrod Saltalamacchia (elbow) has been cleared to report to the Dominican Republic to start a month to six weeks of winter ball rehab. Saltalamacchia missed the last month of the season after straining an elbow ligament. --LHP C.J. Wilson, who had elbow surgery in early August, volunteered to go to winter ball to pitch, but the Rangers elected to have him rest through the winter.
--RHP Pedro Strop signed a minor league deal. Strop, 23, was considered Colorado's No. 9 prospect by Baseball America entering the season, but a fracture at the tip of his right elbow short-circuited his season after just seven appearances. Strop underwent surgery in June and isn't likely to be ready for the start of spring training. But like RHP Warner Madrigal a year ago, he is a converted position player who could be intriguing as a reliever.
--The Rangers must set their 40-man roster by Nov. 19. They currently have 37 players on the roster and are likely to add 1B/OF John Mayberry Jr. and INF Jose Vallejo. Other possibilities include RHPs Omar Poveda, Pedro Strop and Michael Schlact.
BY THE NUMBERS: .372 -- Josh Hamilton's batting average in 137 at-bats as a right fielder in 2008. He hit .282 as a center fielder.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "We don't have a guy like Michael Young for our pitching staff. He's here every day during the winter, working out, setting the tone for other players. They have all followed his lead. To me, that's one of the biggest reasons we've had the problems we've had with conditioning. We don't yet have that Mike Young-type of guy for the pitchers." -- Strength and conditioning coach Jose Vazquez, on the overall condition of Rangers pitchers.
