Texas Rangers Inside Pitch 2009-04-28
The resurgence of Matt Harrison on Monday seemed as sudden as it was stunning. One moment, Baltimore hitters were marching around the bases like a drill team; the next, the Orioles went stone cold silent.

The first part of the game was a repeat of Harrison's first three starts this season in which he struggled to find an out pitch. The second part, which featured a string of 16 consecutive outs, is what the Rangers saw glimpses of last year and what made them pencil Harrison into their rotation of the future.

"The night belonged to Matt Harrison," manager Ron Washington said after Harrison pitched seven innings and allowed four runs and seven hits -- and nothing but a solitary single after the second. "He just kept coming after people."

So how does a pitcher change everything in the blink of an eye?

It's a trick question. He doesn't.

Harrison's recovery actually began nearly a week ago after his last rough start. Pitching coach Mike Maddux talked to him about speeding up his tempo and taking a more aggressive approach on the mound.

A quicker tempo, Maddux reasoned, breeds more aggressive body language. More aggressive body language breeds more aggressive pitching. And more aggressive pitching tends to make batters less comfortable.

"It's just pace," Maddux said. "It was about getting into a rhythm. It worked for Kevin Millwood, it could work for him, too. You've got to act like you want the ball on the mound. You can't just be aggressive; you've got to look aggressive. You've got to look like you want the ball, like you want to be a gladiator out there."

It took Harrison two rough innings to fully adapt, but starting with the last two outs of the second inning, he rolled off 16 consecutive outs while the Rangers made their comeback.

RANGERS 6, ORIOLES 4: The Rangers finished a seven-game trip through the A.L. East with a winning record thanks to a come-from-behind win Monday. It was almost a mirror image of the loss they suffered a day earlier.

The Rangers came back from a 4-0 deficit after two innings Monday after blowing a 5-1 lead Sunday. The Rangers scored once in the fourth on a single by CF Marlon Byrd, added a pair of runs on 3B Michael Young's sixth homer of the season in the fifth and then added three runs in the sixth.

OF David Murphy, who broke an 0-for-23 stretch on Sunday, delivered a two-out, two-run single to give the Rangers the lead.
