Rangerszone.com | Texas Rangers News, rangers Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - Another day, another twist for the Rangers' beleaguered bullpen.
On Wednesday, the Rangers placed one starter on the disabled list, moved a reliever into the rotation, claimed another reliever on waivers, had a 22-year-old rookie make his major league debut and lost another pitcher to an injury in the game. Oh, and they ultimately lost the game when the newly claimed reliever, having arrived three hours after the game, allowed the winning runs to score on a hit while wearing the jersey of a previously demoted pitcher because the club didn't have time to sew his name on his own jersey.
The day started simply enough. The Rangers claimed right-hander Darren O'Day off waivers from the New York Mets.
O'Day, 26, was designated for assignment April 19 by the Mets. He had pitched three innings in four relief appearances for New York this season, allowing five hits and two unearned runs with one walk and two strikeouts. He had, however, allowed all three runners he inherited to score.
O'Day began the day in Panama City, Fla., and didn't make it to Toronto until Wednesday night. The Rangers, however, were locked in a tie game with Toronto and had already lost right-hander Willie Eyre, who aggravated a groin injury that bothered him during spring training. O'Day slipped into a jersey that previously belonged to lefty Kason Gabbard (since demoted to Oklahoma) and entered the game with two runners on and one out in the 11th. Toronto's Kevin Millar was able to lift a sidearm fastball from O'Day to the gap in left-center for a game-winning hit.
O'Day had last pitched on April 16, going a scoreless inning vs. San Diego. O'Day was selected by the Mets in the major league Rule 5 draft from the Los Angeles Angels last December. He was 0-1 with a 4.57 ERA in 30 relief appearances with the Angels last year.
To make room for O'Day on the 40-man roster, the Rangers moved right-hander Dustin Nippert from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL. Nippert has continued to experience soreness in his upper back and side every time he's tried to test his strained oblique muscle.
The Rangers also placed right-hander Kris Benson on the 15-day DL due to right elbow tendinitis. Right-hander Scott Feldman will take Benson's spot in the rotation.
BLUE JAYS 8, RANGERS 7 (11 innings): The Rangers rallied from a four-run deficit Wednesday, but they still fell. 3B Michael Young led off the eighth inning with a double and later scored on a fielder's choice, cutting Toronto's advantage to 7-4. The ninth-inning rally started with 1B Chris Davis being hit by a pitch and C Jarrod Saltalamacchia drawing a walk off LHP B.J. Ryan. A key error by Blue Jays 2B Aaron Hill helped extend the inning. Young eventually tied the score with a solo homer. In the 11th, LHP C.J. Wilson put two runners on base and then RHP Darren O'Day, making his Rangers debut, allowed the winning hit.
