Rangerszone.com | Texas Rangers News, rangers Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - Despite all the ugliness of the league's worst pitching staff and the league's worst fielding percentage, the Rangers are improved over last year. With a 6-4 win over Oakland on Tuesday that snapped a five-game losing streak, Texas won its 76th game of the season, one more than the Rangers won in 2007.
What hasn't improved, however, is the pitching. The Rangers have compiled a 5.42 ERA that ranks last in the majors. They have allowed 951 runs, and the team record of 974 is not out of reach with four games remaining. They became one of just 14 teams in the last 70 years to allow at least 950 runs in a season. On Tuesday, they surpassed the freakishly bad expansion 1962 New York Mets (948). But this is nothing new for the Rangers. Of the 13 teams above them on the list, three were other Rangers clubs, including 2000 (974), 2003 (969) and 2001 (968).
Also, despite playing error-free baseball for the second time in three days, the Rangers have committed a major league-worst 128 errors. It's the highest total for the club since it allowed 135 in 2000.
The errors have led to 104 unearned runs. It is the highest total in the majors by more than 20. It is three shy of the club record set in 1973.
The offense, however, has carried the Rangers as far as it can go. Texas leads the AL in batting average at .281 and in runs scored with 867. The Rangers have already set a club record with 362 doubles and are 11 shy of tying the major league record.
RANGERS 6, A'S 4: The Rangers recaptured second place in the AL West with a come-from-behind win Tuesday night. The win gave the Rangers a half-game lead on Oakland with four games to play. Oakland, which has had one game canceled, also has four games remaining and will only play 161. The Rangers went to the bottom of the seventh trailing 4-3, but LF Marlon Byrd singled to score DH Milton Bradley with the tying run, and then hot-hitting 1B Hank Blalock hit a two-run homer to give the Rangers the lead. It was Blalock's fifth home run in the last 13 games. He is hitting .396 with a 1.330 on-base-plus-slugging percentage and 14 RBIs over that stretch.
