Rangers OF Marlon Byrd hurt diving for ball
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Rangers left fielder Marlon Byrd left Friday night's game against the Boston Red Sox after spraining his left thumb while attempting to make a diving catch.

Byrd was hurt in the first inning when he dove for AL batting leader Dustin Pedroia's sinking liner that went for a double.

The ball short-hopped into Byrd's glove, which came off his hand when it hit the ground. Byrd retrieved the ball and threw it in, then could be seen wincing in pain while flexing his left hand, though nobody went to check on him. Byrd remained in the game for the rest of the inning, but was replaced in the top of the second by Brandon Boggs.

X-rays were negative. The team said Byrd was day-to-day.
