Rangers' McCarthy leaves start with finger injury
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Texas Rangers right-hander Brandon McCarthy left his start against the Detroit Tigers on Monday in the first inning with a strained flexor tendon on his pitching hand.

McCarthy got the first two outs, then began shaking his hand after delivering a pitch to Magglio Ordonez.

Rangers manager Ron Washington and team trainers ran the mound to check on McCarthy, who could not continue.

Luis Mendoza came on to replace McCarthy, who has made only five starts for the Rangers this season because of right forearm inflammation.

The Rangers will monitor McCarthy's condition over the next few days to determine whether surgery will be necessary.

McCarthy was able to appear in only 23 games for Texas last season when he was limited by blisters on his pitching hand and a stress fracture in his right shoulder blade.
