Rangers assign 3B Metcalf, LHP Gabbard to Triple-A
SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) - The Texas Rangers have assigned third baseman Travis Metcalf and left-handed pitcher Kason Gabbard to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Metcalf was sent down Tuesday after hitting .197 in 27 games this spring. He showed promise as a rookie in 2007 but got hurt in spring training last year and hit .232 in just 23 games with Texas.

This year, Metcalf's roster spot was tenuous because All-Star shortstop Michael Young was moved to third base to make room for Elvis Andrus at short.

Gabbard was outrighted to Oklahoma City after clearing waivers. He had been sent to minor league camp March 15.

Elbow trouble cut short Gabbard's 2008 season after he was acquired at the trade deadline from Boston in 2007. He appeared in only one spring game.
