The Rangers have purchased the contract of Derek Holland from Triple-A Oklahoma City, and the prized left-hander will be in the bullpen for tonight's game against Kansas City. He takes the spot of right-hander Josh Rupe, who has been designated for assigment after a lackluster spring and start to the season. Holland made only one start for the RedHawks, taking the loss Monday against Nashville after allowing four runs in four innings. The hope is his promotion will improve a bullpen that has the highest ERA in Baseball while also giving him his first taste of the big leagues in a situation with less pressure than had he been dropped in the starting rotation.
Team president Nolan Ryan had said that allowing Holland and Neftali Feliz to make their big-league debuts as relievers was a strong consideration. It has happened after Rupe was ineffective for much of the spring and through four appearances so far this season. He posted a 15.43 ERA (eight earned runs in 4 2/3 innings) with five walks. He allowed three runs Friday against the Royals.
The Rangers have 10 days to trade, release or outright Rupe to the minor leagues.
