Andruw Jones could stick with Rangers as backup
PHOENIX (AP) - Andruw Jones could stick with the Texas Rangers through spring training, even though he won't be a starter and there is no guarantee of him making the team.

During a meeting Sunday with general manager Jon Daniels and manager Ron Washington, the five-time All-Star said he would be willing to remain with Texas as a backup outfielder and part-time designated hitter.

"We've told Andruw that he won't start for us," Daniels said. "He responded by expressing a desire to be here in any role we need him. The Rangers will continue to discuss the situation. No decision has been made."

Jones wasn't with the team for its Cactus League game Sunday against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Jones, who turns 32 next month, and the Rangers agreed Friday to extend by three days the deadline for a provision in his minor league contract that would allow him to become a free agent if he's not put on the big league roster. The extension pushed the deadline to Monday.

"That doesn't necessarily mean it will be finalized (Monday)," Daniels said. "He's expressed a willingness to stay longer."

On Saturday, Jones made his first appearance in a Cactus League game since March 13 and went 1-for-2 with a double after pinch hitting in the seventh inning against Colorado.

In 14 spring training games, Jones is hitting .273 with three doubles, one home run and two RBIs. He has 14 strikeouts in 33 at-bats. Jones hit two home runs in a minor league game.

Texas has a set outfield, with All-Star slugger Josh Hamilton in center, Nelson Cruz in right and David Murphy or Marlon Byrd in left. Frank Catalanotto, owed $4 million by the Rangers this season, is the fifth outfielder.

Hank Blalock, a two-time All-Star third baseman, is set to be the primary designated hitter. The Rangers exercised a $6.2 million contract option during the offseason for Blalock to return.

Jones won 10 consecutive Gold Gloves as Atlanta's center fielder before agreeing to a $36.2 million, two-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers before last season. He then hit .158 with three home runs in 75 games, made the first three trips to the disabled list in his career and was released.

If added to the Rangers' big league roster, Jones would get a $500,000, one-year contract and the chance to earn up to $1 million in performance bonuses based on plate appearances from 340 to 620.
